KUALA LUMPUR: The National Cancer Council Malaysia (Makna) Malaysia will be organising a night run on Nov 1 in an effort to raise more than RM150,000 for its cancer patients.
The Makna Founder's Night Run 2014, which will be held at Water Sport Complex, in Presint 6, Putrajaya, also marks the council's 20th anniversary of providing services and assistance to cancer patients and their family members.
The run, which begins at 8pm, is divided into three categories: 15km for men and women open; 10km for men and women open; and a 5km joy run, with an estimated 5,000 runners participating in the run. The participation fee is RM30 each.
Makna deputy general manager Vemanna Appanah said that the targeted fund amount will be used to cover the treatment cost for the patients, equipment purchases and medicine.
"Up to date, we have collected a total of RM80,000, and we hope to collect RM150,000 or more from this event," he told a press conference today.
Also present at the press conference were Makna founder and president Datuk Mohd Farid Ariffin and Makna general manager Farahida Mohd Farid.
Vemanna also said that before the run, the events ground will be open for various activities, including sales of food and beverages, mammogram screenings with discounted rates, as well as the "Jom Botak" event, where the public can get their heads shaved in support of cancer patients.
"We aim to break the existing record in the Malaysia Book of Records for the most head shaved (in an event)," he said.
At the same press conference, Farahida said that the council will hold a gathering for some 300 cancer patients, cancer survivors and their caregivers from all over the country at the Cempaka International Ladies College between Nov 1 and 3.
"Through this gathering, we just want to honour our patients, give them morale support and treat them as 'Kings and Queens'".
"We want to encourage them to not give up in facing the adversities and challenges in life," she said.
