KOTA BELUD: A total of 121 employees from various public and private agencies participated in the Kembara Merdeka Negaraku convoy for the northern west coast level here today to enliven the Independence Month celebrations.
The programme, which is organised by the Information Department, saw 28 four-wheel-drive vehicles and 15 bicycles convoying around five areas in the district, namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pekan Kota Belud II, SMK (Agama) Tun Said, Kampung Tangkurus 1Malaysia Community,  Kampung Jawi-Jawi 1Malaysia Community, and Kuala Abai 1Malaysia Community.
The flagging off the participants at 9.20am in front of the Kota Belud District Council was officiated by Sabah Agriculture and Food Industries Assistant Minister Datuk Musbah Jamli and witnessed by Sabah Information Department director Suwadi Guliling.
In his speech, Musbah said Sabahans, especially in Kota Belud, should show solidarity and commitment to enlivening the Independence Month celebration to express their patriotism and show their love for the country.
"Let us strengthen our love for the country and show our appreciation for the freedom we enjoyed today," he said.
Musbah said every citizen of the country, especially the young generation, should observe the true meaning of independence as the annual National Day celebration should be more than just flying the Jalur Gemilang and singing patriotic songs.
He said the freedom they enjoyed today was a result of the deeds and sacrifices made by the previous generation and the freedom fighters, and today's generation owed it to those people to protect and defend the country for future generations.
The northern west coast-level convoy is scheduled to proceed to Pitas tomorrow and Kota Marudu on Thursday before ending in Kudat on Friday. — Bernama
