GEORGE TOWN: A 30-year-old Bangladeshi construction worker died on the spot when a wall of a condominium show unit in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah collapsed on him yesterday.
Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Service operations chief Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah said the department received a distress call at 9.26pm and its personnel were rushed to the scene in four minutes.
He said as the victim was trapped under the rubble, rescue workers had to use air bags and pneumatic jacks to lift the fallen beams before they could remove the debris.
"We took about 35 minutes to extricate the body from the rubble," he told reporters at the scene.
Mohd Suhaimi said the victim, identified only as Samsul, was putting finishing touches to the show unit when the wall collapsed.
He said the department has yet to ascertain the cause of the collapse, which occurred during a drizzle.
