13 arrested over gruesome killing of gang leader in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A total of 13 suspects – four of them women – have been arrested in police swoops in Johor, Singapore and Penang, in connection with the gruesome murder of a gang leader at a petrol station last Sunday.
Singapore police helped nab four men and three women in the island republic today, while a special team set up by Johor police to investigate the case arrested four others in the state the same day.
The first arrests, that of two suspects, including a woman, were made in Penang on Wednesday.
Johor police chief Commissioner Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd in a statement today said the suspects were aged between 16 and 26.
Police are still looking for a more suspects.
Meanwhile, the magistrate's court here today issued remand orders for six of the suspects to facilitate investigations into the murder.
Magistrate Noor Aisyah Ahmad allowed the application by police to remand the five men, in their 20's, and a woman, aged 19, for seven days from Thursday.
In the 7.30pm incident last Sunday, Tan Aik Chai, 44, was stabbed by four men in a white BMW which was then used to knock him down before running over him twice.
Tan had stopped at the petrol station with a woman, said to be his Vietnamese wife, to check the tyres of his car when he was set upon by the assailants.
Following the brutal murder, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also home minister, was quoted as saying that the victim was a secret society leader and the attack was part of an ongoing dispute between two secret society gangs.
Earlier today, family members convened at the Nirvana Memorial Centre in Jalan Skudai here to pay their last respects before Tan's remains were sent off to his hometown in Malacca.
His wife and three sons were seen boarding a bus to accompany the body to Malacca for burial.
