AirAsia’s damage claims ‘wholly unjustified’, says MAHB

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has categorically denied that it owes AirAsia Bhd for damages due to cracking and ponding at the klia2, saying that the low-cost carrier claims as "wholly unjustified."
In an announcement to Bursa Malaysia last Friday, MAHB said AirAsia's demand for RM409 million were "unsupported by any particulars and the facts relied upon by AirAsia to support its claims are misleading and tainted with factual inaccuracies."
AirAsia Bhd is seeking RM409 million from MAHB for alleged losses and damages incurred while operating from klia2 and from the low-cost carrier terminal.
The budget carrier had served a letter of demand on MAHB and its wholly-owned subsidiary Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd on July 31, 2015.
AirAsia claimed that MAHB had failed and breached its contractual duties, which had caused AirAsia to suffer and continue to suffer losses.
AirAsia also claimed that MAHB's breaches had damaged its brand and reputation as the public perception is that the failings of the facilities are within the control of the airline.
In an interview with The Malaysian Insider last Friday, MAHB managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali claimed that the airport operator had informed AirAsia last year about the ground depression problems at klia2 and that it would take up to five years to resolve.
