KUALA LUMPUR: The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (Gebco) is vital to the Royal Malaysian Navy and the country as Malaysia relies heavily on sea operations.
Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Johari Baharum said many people are unaware of the fundamental roles of the navy, which relies solely on the sea to defend the country.
He added that besides being used in protecting the country, Gebco is also useful in finding and maintaining the country's resources such as oil and gas.
"Many of our resources come from the sea. Thus, Gebco is important not just for the navy but also for other industries such as oil and gas, fisheries and agriculture," said Johari during the launch of Gebco Bathymetric Science Day 2015 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday.
He said that the Gebco Bathymetric Science Day is an honour to the country as this is the first to be held here and in Asia.
