LANGKAWI: Those out to oust Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir will lead the state Barisan Nasional to its doom in the coming general election, former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pix) said today.
He claimed that those concerned would not be able to unite the state and would only lead BN to a defeat.
"We lost Kedah to the opposition under the leadership of those trying to topple Mukhriz.
"We must consider the consequences involved before initiating such a move," he said at the opening of Global Doctors Clinic Langkawi, a chain under an international private hospital and clinic services, today.
He also claimed that those involved in the ouster move did not have a good reputation and had caused Kedah to fall to PAS in 2008.
"What happens if these people take over? We will lose Kedah again," he said.
Asked if he had any advice for Mukhriz, he said anything could happen in politics and nothing was permanent.
"We have friends, we have enemies. Friends can behave like enemies, enemies can behave like friends," he said.
Last Wednesday, state deputy Umno chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Hanipah led a group of Kedah Umno leaders to declare that they had lost confidence and trust in Mukhriz, and called for an immediate change in leadership.
On another note, Mahathir said the growing number of tourists projected to come to Langkawi over the next few years requires it to have more medical facilities.
Although the government over the years had provided a number of medical infrastructure on the island, it would not be sufficient and needed to be complemented by private medical hospitals.
He said ever since Langkawi was declared duty-free in 1987, the island had experienced a jump in the number of tourists arrival.
"Langkawi will continue growing and maybe it can attract as many as 10 million tourists (a year)," he added.
