KUALA LUMPUR: In a show of protest against the arrest of Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, a group of around 40 opposition federal lawmakers and prominent leaders marched from Parliament to the Federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman.
The aim of the march was to submit a memorandum to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to demand for Rafizi's release.
Among federal lawmakers who joined the march were opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ibrahim, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and PAS' sole representative Datuk Mahfuz Omar.
Former cabinet minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and Pakatan Harapan secretary Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah also participated in the march.
Beginning their march in front of the Parliament gate at 9am, the group arrived at their destination 30 minutes later.
Shouts of "Undur Najib", "Under IGP", "Bebas Rafizi", "Selamatkan Malaysia" and "Daulat Parlimen" could be heard along the march which commenced at 9am led by Shah Alam MP Khalid Abd Samad.
The group who arrived at Bukit Aman 30 minutes later were stopped at the gates by police, following which several representatives handed over the memorandum which was received by a police representative.
At this point, a police personnel informed the group that they had committed and offence under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for not providing prior notice to the police before marching.
Later in a press conference held at Parliament lobby, Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul said the police had acted roughly in arresting Rafizi.
He added that the manner in which Rafizi was arrested was an insult to the institution of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur police chief CP Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh said he would call the rally organisers for questioning soon.
He said the organisers must submit a notification 10 days before the rally.
