Guan Eng questions proposed law on political funding

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pix) is unimpressed with the proposed law on political funding.
He said the proposed Political Donations and Expenditure Act (PDEA) did not go far enough.
He asked why the cap on spending during campaigns was removed.
"Are the elections now for the rich and not for the people?," he questioned in a press conference today.
Lim, who is also Bagan MP, said what was proposed did not have measures to stop money politics which should be outlawed.
He said the PDEA lacks provisions to require government administrators to declare their assets publicly.
He said Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Chief Ministers, Mentri Besars and Excos should be made to do so.
The DAP secretary general asked if they can be confident the law will be applied fairly.
"Will it be used to attack opposition supporters? We have our doubts," he added.
Lim earlier launched the Thomas Town Mini and Mighty Malaysian Tour Penang leg.
The blue engine and his friends will be on exhibit at the Gurney Paragon mall for the next two weeks.
