84 arrested for gambling in 42 raids in Sarawak last week

KUCHING: Sarawak police intensified its blitz against illegal gambling including illegitimate 4D punting last week with 42 raids between Oct 3 and yesterday at 16 towns leading to the arrest of 84 people including 10 foreigners.
State CID chief, Datuk Dev Kumar M.M. Sree Shunmugam said the 42 raids were conducted at various locations – 17 at shoplots, 14 at public places such as five-foot ways, five at coffee shops, five at grocery shops and one in a hand-phone accessory premises.
He said the raids were related to illegal character lottery, online gambling and gambling machines, and 4D gambling premises.
Those arrested were aged between 17 and 54-years-old.
"The operations were initiated as a measure to eradicate illegal gambling activities including the 4D punting before it mushrooms throughout the state," he told theSun when contacted.
Of the 42 raids, he said, 10 were conducted by the Sarawak CID headquarters, five by Miri police, Padawan (four raids), Kuching, Limbang and Bau (three each), Sibu, Serian, Bintulu, and Sarikei (two raids each), followed by Sri Aman, Betong, Kapit, Marudi, Mukah and Kota Samarahan (one each).
Dev Kumar added cash amounting to RM15,801 were seized during the raids, including various items namely computers, portable printers, mobile phones, calculators, and betting ledgers and punting slips.
