Ministry to boost efforts to reduce accidents at construction sites

PUTRAJAYA: The Human Resource Ministry will continue to boost efforts and improve the system to ensure that the safety and health of workers and members of the public are not affected by construction activities at the site.
Its Secretary-General Datuk Seri Adenan Ab Rahman said lately there had been numerous accidents involving the loss of lives and serious injury at construction sites.
As such, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) will enhance enforcement at construction sites with the focus on the main contractors as the employer with overall control on the project.
"DOSH has carried out 6,417 inspections during the first seven months of this year, which was 12% more compared to the corresponding period of last year and at the same time 21% more prosecution had been carried out compared to last year," he said at the National Seminar on Workers' Safety and Health, here today.
Also present were the director-general of the department, Datuk Ir Mohtar Musri and his deputy, Ir Omar Mat Piah.
Adenan added that up to July this year, the number of summonses imposed on contractors amounted to RM1.1 million, up 57% compared to the corresponding period in 2015.
Meanwhile, Omar said the two accidents that occurred at the project sites near the Mid Valley and Pavilion shopping centres had received approval from the Attorney-General to prosecute the contractors concerned. — Bernama
