SHAH ALAM: Datuk Jailani Johari has urged all quarters, including opposition leaders to drop attempts to sabotage the country's economy by sensationalising false information via social media to confuse the public.
The deputy communications and multimedia minister said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was constantly monitoring the irresponsible parties who would also be subjected to legal action.
"Every attempt to make the false information go viral, which is deemed as 'daily food' for that group, should be curbed because it can affect the country's potential investers.
"Indeed, there is a provision under the MCMC Act on the action against any party found to have issued disgraceful statements affecting the country's harmony," he told reporters after officiating the Innofun-DIY Olabot Workshop here today.
Thus, Jailani said, society should be smart in using the social media and not be influenced by such false information to sabotage the country's economy, and instead refer to reliable sources.
Meanwhile, he said the country was now facing a shortage of specialists and human capital in data engineering and technology as there were currently only 350 data scientists.
Jailani said the country needed at least 20,000 professional data officers and 2,500 data scientists in the next three years to fulfil the government's aspirations in expanding its e-commerce initiative.
"As the government embarks on internet digital economy this year, at least 20% from the field of data engineering and technology will contribute to the country's growth.
"Therefore, the employability (of people) in data engineering will be high, which is why we're really encouraging the younger generation to be interested in science and technology from young, to achieve the objectives of the 2050 National Transformation," he said.
Commenting on the two-day workshop organised by Universiti Teknologi MARA's (UiTM) Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Jailani recommended that more quarters come out with a variety of internet facilities to instill passion among school children in science and technology. — Bernama
