KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan (PH) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who has been serving a prison sentence since Feb 10, 2015, has been given a royal pardon and was released with immediate effect.
In a statement, Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Wan Ahmad Dahlan said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V has given his royal assent for Anwar's release and full pardon.
He said the decision was made after an appeal for the PKR de facto leader's pardon and release was submitted and considered at the 51st Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting earlier today.
"In line with Article 42 of the Federal Constitution, the Agong, on the advice of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya Pardons Board, has assented that Anwar's full pardon be allowed.
"And he is also to be given an immediate release that is to take effect from the date of the Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting (today)," he said.
Anwar was initially set for a release on June 8, but had his prison sentence cut short following the royal pardon.
