GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng described the Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged in Sungai Dua as the best old folks home in the country.
Lim said since its establishment in 1935, the elderly were well taken care of by the staff.
He said the various facilities in the home was at a world class standard, and attested to the excellent and efficient management of the home which ensured the residents were provided with all the care and attention they needed.
"Silver Jubilee Home also opens its doors to potential residents and the public throughout the year.
"At the two medical wards for males and females, residents are cared for by nursing staff 24 hours a day and we can be proud that this is the best run government senior citizens welfare home in Malaysia," he said during his speech at the Senior Citizen's Day at the home.
Lim spent more than an hour at the old folks home, mingling and exploring the place.
He also had his lunch with the residents while enjoying the singing performance at the Cheah Leong Keah Hall.
The Silver Jubilee stands on a 22.5 acre plot of land donated by Cheah Leong Keah and houses over 160 residents there.
Run by general committee members, it is supported by some 50 full time staff members.
All of the home's expenditures are raised from public sources.
Lim said the position of Silver Jubilee Home chairman, which he holds, was not because he received votes from the residents but because of his responsibility as the chief minister of the state. He added that it was a responsibility entrusted to him as the head of government to chair such charity organisations.
