Cooperative election candidates should go through MACC vetting first: Angkasa

KOTA BARU: Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) today proposed for individuals who wish to contest at the election to select cooperative's committee and board members, should be vetted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) first.
Its president, Datuk Abdul Fattah Abdullah, said the proposal has been submitted to the MACC and was expected to commence in the cooperative's upcoming election.
"This is one of the strategies implemented to ensure that the elected leaders have high level of integrity and that people will be able to trust them," he told reporters after officiating the Kelantan State Cooperative Leadership and Integrity Seminar and Angkasa Corruption-Free Pledge, here today.
Abdul Fattah said the move was seen as necessary by Angkasa to avoid problems that would affect the image of cooperative organisations.
"We put great emphasis on this because cooperatives are instruments recognised by the government and Angkasa has its own integrity unit and we are among the first 13 agencies that have earned the recognition in term of integrity," he said.
Also present were MACC deputy chief commissioner (Prevention) Datuk Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil and Kelantan Angkasa liaison chairman Datuk Che Mohd Shukree Che Isa. — Bernama
