Domestic gas appliances need approval from Energy Commission, Sirim label

KUALA LUMPUR: All domestic gas appliances using liquid petroleum gas (LPG) have to be approved by the Energy Commission (ST) and have the Sirim labels before they are marketed in the country.
The enforcement is in line with Regulation 116(1), 117 (1) and 119 (1) with the Gas Supply (Amendment) Regulations 2017.
"The regulations will be fully implemented on April 1, 2019 to give the industry and Sirim time to make full preparations," the commission said in a statement today.
Once implemented, any party which fails to abide by the regulations will face action under the Gas Supply (Amendment) Act 2016, and Gas Supply Regulation (amendment) 2017.
If found guilty, they can be fined up to RM100,000 and in the case of repeat offenders, a fine of up to RM2,000 for each day or part of a day the offence is committed upon conviction, will be imposed.
According to the commission, the regulations are aimed at ensuring that gas appliances which are marketed in the country had ST approval, have undergone tests to ensure its safety, and that its installer, manufacturer and importer were registered with the ST.
At present, domestic gas appliances in the local market do not have any labels or approval stickers from the ST and Sirim like electrical appliances have, making it difficult for the public to know their safety status.
