Govt cooperates with social media giants against fake accounts: Salleh

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is currently working with social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to remove fake accounts which had been used for negative purposes.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said evidence had been presented to the networks to assist them to remove the fake accounts.
“Some of these fake accounts are using foreign platforms and thus far, we have been negotiating with the networks that resulted in action having been taken against them (by removing these fake accounts).
“For fake accounts hosted locally, there should be no problem, we can remove them,” he told reporters at the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) Aidilfitri ‘do’ here tonight.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Jasa Director-General Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
Between January and June, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission received nearly 1,500 complaints pertaining to fake accounts on social media platforms that had been used for negative purposes, including dissemination of fake news and defamatory attacks against state leaders. — Bernama
