KUALA TERENGGANU: Cattle and buffalo breeders in Terengganu must report to the Department of Veterinary Services if they find their livestock infected with Haemorrhagic Septicemia, a severe bacterial disease.
State Agriculture and Agrobased Industries, Plantation Industry and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Pehimi Yusof, said early reports from farmers will facilitate the department to prevent the disease from spreading further and save the animals infected with the bacteria in the early stage itself.
"Among the free services provided by the department to livestock farmers are vaccinations and antibiotic injections by a qualified veterinary officer.
"On the death of large numbers of livestock, the local authorities (PBT) also provide free services for the disposal of carcasses of diseased livestock according to standard operating procedures (SOP)," he told a press conference here.
The outbreak was first detected on May 26 and so far 340 cases of livestock deaths have been reported involving 284 cows and 56 buffaloes, in the three districts of Marang, Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus. — Bernama
