KUALA TERENGGANU: A police inspector pleaded not guilty at the sessions court here today to a charge of accepting a RM3,000 bribe as an inducement to "take it easy" on an individual caught for drug offences in February 2016.
Lee Beng Oui, 37, from the Anti-Narcotics Unit of Kemaman police, was accused of receiving the money from Corporal Aziz Abdullah , acting on behalf of Asmadi Ali, the father of Firdaus Asmadi who was arrested for possession of drugs and testing positive for drugs.
Lee is alleged to have received the bribe in front of a house at No 1, Blok Ezora, Perumahan Polis (PDRM) Bukit Mentok, Kemaman, at 11.45pm on Feb 29, 2016 to let Firdaus escape the possession offence, which carries a heavier penalty.
He is liable to be jailed up to 20 years and fined five times the corrupt amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if convicted.
Judge Mohd Haldar Abdul Aziz allowed bail at RM10,000 and fixed Feb 21 for re-mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Amer Abu Bakar Abdullah appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by Legal Aid counsel Raudah Dzulaika Mohamad. — Bernama
