Logistics company director faces 21 counts of false declarations on contact lens import

SEPANG: A logistics company director was slapped with 21 counts of making false declarations in the customs forms involving the import of contact lenses valued at RM311,052.75 at the Magistrate's Court here today.
Rizan Jantan, 46, who was an agent appointed by the Customs Department pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out before Magistrate Norul Fitri Hamdan.
On all the charges, he was accused of making false declarations in Customs Form 1 2015 for 10,817 units of contact lenses valued at RM29,494.03 while the actual quantity was 129,818 units worth RM311,052.75, a difference of RM281,558.72.
The man was charged with committing the offences between Jan 6 and March 17, 2015, under Section 133 (1) (a) of the Customs Act 1967 which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000 or a maximum jail term of five years or both upon conviction.
Rizan was unrepresented while Mohd Roezamir Mohd Rozman and Mohd Hatta Safar prosecuted on behalf of the Customs Department.
Magistrate Norul Fitri allowed bail at RM28,000 in one surety and ordered the accused to hand over his passport to the court.
The case will be re-mentioned on July 20. — Bernama
