MACC senior officer remanded for allegedly extorting money from policeman (Updated)

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) senior officer has been remanded for three days from today for allegedly extorting money from a policeman.
The remand order was issued by Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit to enable the police to conduct a probe against the 38-year-old assistant superintendent under Section 384 of the Penal Code.
The suspect, clad in orange lock-up suit covered his face when he arrived at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate's court at about 9.25am.
It was reported the suspect, who was attached to the Intelligence Unit (Northern Zone) headquarters in Putrajaya, was arrested at a restaurant in Taman Machang Bubok yesterday at about 10pm.
Central Seberang Prai district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid in a statement yesterday said the MACC senior officer is suspected of having solicited hush money from the policeman who is said to have protected a gambling racket for the past two years.
The suspect who has been with MACC for 16 years was alleged to have asked the policeman to pay him RM3,000 monthly, or risk being arrested by the MACC.
During the raid by a D7 Unit, the suspect was caught red-handed with RM3,000 cash in his possession.
Also confiscated were his MyKad, MACC authority identification, two 9mm SME bullets shells, an iPhone and a Volkswagen Polo Sedan believed to belong to the suspect.
The suspect who is married with three kids is being investigated for extortion and faces jail sentences of up to 10 years, with fine or whipping or any two such punishments.
Meanwhile, in a statement today Putrajaya MACC said the graft-busting agency will not compromise on the law even it involved its own officer.
The statement said MACC are ready to cooperate with police and promised it will not interfere with the investigation.
It further stated that they will not budge even an inch from its principle even if there are officers from MACC committed the crime and stern action will be taken against the culprit who has tarnish the good name and reputation of MACC.
It also said that MACC will conduct a strict internal check to all of its officers to ensure that the same incident will not happen again in the future.
