PETALING JAYA: The against-the-odds rescue of 12 boys and their football coach trapped in a cave in Chiangrai has touched the heart of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"On behalf of all Malaysians, I would like to congratulate the rescuers and the Thai authorities for the daring and remarkable rescue of the 12 boys and their football coach yesterday," Mahathir said in a Facebook post today.
"We are elated that the rescue mission was a complete success and these boys, who were stranded in the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Mai, can now return to their families.
"The mission was not without sacrifices. Our hearts go to Petty Officer First Class Samarn Gunan, who tragically lost his life while delivering oxygen tanks into the cave during the mission."
Mahathir said Gunan's heroic deeds will remain etched in the memories of the Thais and the rest of the world who had followed the episode closely. "Our deepest condolences to his family and friends," he added.
