CYBERJAYA: Malaysia is hosting the inaugural Asean Makerthon 2017 and Internet of Things (IoT) Information Sharing Workshop beginning today until Sept 10, at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) former headquarters in Cyberjaya.
MCMC said the event was a regional initiative in line with the objectives of the Asean ICT Masterplan 2020 and aimed to establish a strong network and presence of makers adopting IoT in the Asean region.
"The programme serves as a platform for Asean makers to showcase their skills, pitching ideas and creativity in producing prototypes," it said in a statement here today.
MCMC said 10 Asean member states would send teams of two to three members each to participate in the Asean Makerthon 2017, as well as participating Asean Telecommunications and Information Technology Senior Officials (Telsom) Dialogue Partners, including China and Republic of Korea.
It said this year's theme focused on smart cities, healthcare and agriculture (track, trace, improve, reduce).

MCMC said the programme would consist of a one-day IoT Information Sharing Workshop and a maker hackathon where participants would be allocated two days to build their proposed prototypes.
Throughout the event, participants would be granted full access to the MCMC's myMaker IoT Lab, equipped with equipment such as laser cutters, computer numerical control (CNC) machine, 3D printers, soldier kits and some basic tools.
The champion for this event will receive cash prize of US$1,000, (RM4,185); first runner-up US$800; and 2nd runner-up will bag US$500.
Certificate of participation would also be issued to all team members, MCMC said. — Bernama
