PUTRAJAYA: McDonald's Malaysia is the silver sponsor of the 29th SEA Games and 9th Asean Para Games with sponsorship worth amounting to over RM1 million.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the sponsorship would include cash, goods and services at several branches in Johor, Penang and Putrajaya that are the stopovers for the Touch Relay 2017 event.
He said the participation of McDonald's as a sponsor for the first time not only strengthened the brand in the Southeast Asian region but could also unite Malaysians as had been done through their food products.
"The sponsorship today is nothing new for McDonald's especially with its involvement as a sponsor in the Olympics. I understand that it is the company’s first appearance in the history of the Southeast Asian Games. I am happy with the development.
"Masoc (Kuala Lumpur Secretariat 2017) is pleased to accept the participation of McDonald's which is a global and extensive brand," he said after witnessing the signing of the sponsorship deal between McDonald’s Malaysia and SEA Games and Para Asean Games organising committee here today.
He said the brand influence is also huge and it has become a part of the lifestyle by taking into account that McDonald's received more than 13.5 million customers monthly in all its branches in Malaysia.
Khairy, who is also Masoc chairman, said McDonald's has significance on how to work as a team which could be applied to the people to jointly support the national athletes and the biennial sports meet for a meaningful participation of the people.
"McDonald's sponsorship is important and big because we can get visibility through decorations and promotions throughout its branches nationwide.
Khairy also said the organisers welcomed the sponsorship in the form of cash, which has reached 71% of the target.
“The sponsorship has reach 89% from the targeted amount so far. — Bernama
