KOTA BARU: More than 200 coastal fishermen at Jeti Tanjong Kuala, near Pantai Sabak, Pengkalan Chepa here, urged the authorities to act fast and take stern action against Vietnamese fishermen who encroached into Malaysian waters.
They claimed the foreign fishermen destroyed the "Unjam", which is a type of fish aggregating device (FAD), which they had placed in the sea.
Chairman of the Tanjong Kuala Fishing Community, Mohd Faizal Rashid , said the use of Class C boat by Vietnamese fishermen not only destroyed the unjam, but also robbed the local fishermen of the marine resources.
During the monsoon season, the coastal fishermen rely on the unjam for their catch, but they have been destroyed by the foreign fishermen, he told reporters here.
Fisheries director-general Datuk Munir Mohd Nawi, who visited the jetty, said the department would discuss the matter with the relevant agencies. — Bernama
