RM6b allocated for PPR projects nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: About RM6 billion has been allocated by the government for 120 People's Housing Projects (PPRs) with 83,759 units completed throughout Malaysia.
Sabah has the most number of PPR housing projects implemented by the National Housing Department (JPN) with 26,199 units of low-cost houses.
JPN drector-general Jayaselan K. Navaratnam said 41 PPR projects with 15,327 units were under construction while 23 projects with 10,066 units were still in the pipeline.
He said the implementation of PPR depends on several factors including high demand from the people in the area, applications from the state government to obtain low-cost housing as well as targeted at those living in squatter areas and low income earners with household income not exceeding RM3,000 per month.
All PPR projects involved two types, PPR-For-Rent at only RM124 a month and PPR-To-Own that can be purchased at RM35,000 per unit in Peninsular Malaysia and RM42,000 per unit in Sabah and Sarawak, Jayaselan told Bernama.
"The response to PPR projects is very encouraging as PPR units are rented out and sold at a fairly low rate compared to the market rate where construction cost per unit is between RM150,000 and RM180,000, " he said.
PPR, a programme under the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, with JPN as the implementing agency, is aimed at squatters resettlement as well as meeting the needs of the lower income group.
Both types of PPR are equipped with three bedrooms, living room, kitchen and two bathrooms as well as basic facilities such as community halls, surau, kindergartens, playgrounds and dining outlets. — Bernama
