KUCHING: Sarawak police made their biggest drug bust this year with the seizure of 11kg of what were believed to be syabu and 993 ecstasy pills valued at about RM3.4 million and found in several packets of Chinese tea, after they raided a house in Stutong, here, last Thursday.
State police deputy commissioner, Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim said two men, aged 27, were also picked up by the Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) after the raiding team discovered the drugs in one of the bedrooms on the upper floor and in an old aquarium, which was placed in a storeroom next to the house.
One of the two suspects had three criminal records for drug-related offences and police were still investigating whether there were other members of the drug syndicate, he told a press conference, here, today.
Mohd Dzuraidi also said police were investigating if the drugs brought into the country were meant for local consumption or to be smuggled to other countries.
Both the suspects are being remanded until Friday to facilitate the investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Meanwhile, a statement released to the media showed that the Sarawak NCID had solved 1,453 cases involving 1,951 arrests for drug possession and trafficking last year.
The statistics also showed that the department had solved 1,301 cases involving 1,702 arrests for the same offences since January this year until now. — Bernama
