KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's decision to return the two awards he received from the Selangor Palace can be seen as an insult.
He said Mahathir's act of returning the awards, was an insult to the honour of the awards given to him.
Nur Jazlan added that it was not Malay culture to do so.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman returned the awards last Thursday on Dec 7.
Mahathir was the recipient of two medals of honour – one from the then Selangor Sultan in 1978, and the other from the current Ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in 2003.
The Selangor Council of the Royal Court confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that both Mahathir and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali had returned the awards conferred on them by the Selangor Palace.
The former prime minister's decision to return the awards came shortly after Sultan Sharafuddin expressed his dissatisfaction with Mahathir's comments about the Bugis community.
Mahathir had reportedly told a Pakatan Harapan rally in October that Malaysia was being led by a prime minister who was the descendant of Bugis pirates.
The former premier's comments drew the ire of the Bugis community, several NGO's and Johor Ruler, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
