The Mutiara Line LRT project has empowered Bumiputera contractors with over RM1.14 billion in construction contracts to date
GEORGE TOWN: The Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit project has become a catalyst for Bumiputera contractor empowerment, awarding over RM1.14 billion in construction contracts to the group.
In its first construction year, 24 Bumiputera contractors were appointed under the project.
Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said participation in MRT Corp projects indicates a contractor meets high standards for major public works.
“Through the Mutiara Line LRT, we are bringing this valuable experience and high level of expertise to the Northern Region,” he told Bernama.
Mohd Zarif recently presented appointment letters to seven Bumiputera contractors for the project, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The contractors are among recipients of 10 work packages awarded under MRT Corp’s Bumiputera special allocation policy.
This policy allocates 40% of the total project value, amounting to RM3.17 billion under the first civil works contract, for Bumiputera participation.
Bumiputera contractor Ilya Fasya Mohd Nazar described the opportunity as a major turning point in her business journey.
The Insabina Enterprise representative viewed her appointment as a personal achievement and a testament to her capability.
“I want other young women to see that there is a place for us in this industry,” she said.
Muhammad Ifwat Norshaidi of IFW Bina Enterprise said the project marked his first involvement in a national-scale rail construction.
“This project is very different, as the documentation, safety requirements and reporting processes are far more structured,” he said.
MRT Corp stated the successful contractors will undergo a structured orientation programme.
The 29.5-kilometre Mutiara Line LRT with 21 stations aims to enhance connectivity between Penang Island and the mainland.
