UNITED SIKHS intensify rescue of Malaysians stranded in Hat Yai floods

UNITED SIKHS Malaysia launches full-force operation to evacuate Malaysians trapped by severe flooding in Hat Yai, prioritising vulnerable groups.

ALOR SETAR: UNITED SIKHS Malaysia has intensified its rescue operations for Malaysians stranded by severe flooding in Hat Yai, Thailand.

The volunteer group is deploying a “full force” operation today to evacuate as many victims as possible following a temporary slowdown yesterday.

President Sunil Shukvir Singh said dangerous floodwaters reaching 10-14 feet high had hampered rescue efforts previously.

He confirmed that an estimated 1,000 people have been rescued since Sunday and transported to Danok for processing before returning to Malaysia.

Other agencies including the Sungai Petani volunteer fire brigade are also assisting in the operation.

“There were many SOS messages sent to us asking for help,” Sunil told Bernama.

“Yesterday, we managed to rescue children, pregnant women and senior citizens. We prioritise these groups because their needs are more urgent.”

The team initially operated with only two boats but has now added another boat and two four-wheel-drive vehicles.

“Today we can conduct a full operation as the rain has eased and the water level has receded, allowing us to bring in four-wheel drives,” he explained.

The rescue focus will be on several hotels where Malaysians remain trapped.

“We will rescue them one by one, but what we have seen during these operations is heartbreaking. Many victims are hungry and dehydrated.”

During evacuations, the team distributes food including nasi lemak, bread, biscuits and milk to victims before moving them to safety.

Despite continuous work, all UNITED SIKHS volunteers remain in good health though exhausted from non-stop operations.

“Besides fatigue, they are also anxious because of the pressure to ensure all Malaysians still in Hat Yai can be rescued quickly,” Sunil added.

He expressed gratitude that no serious incidents have occurred and everyone remains safe throughout the challenging rescue mission. – Bernama
