Port Klang and PTP set new container handling records in 2025

Malaysia’s Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas achieved record container volumes in 2025, with growth of 3.4% and 14% respectively.

KUALA LUMPUR: Port Klang and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) have set new records for total container handling volume in 2025.

Port Klang recorded annual growth of 3.4%, while PTP achieved a 14% increase.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the performance reflects Malaysia’s growing strength as a regional maritime and logistics hub.

“The strong growth in container handling volumes demonstrates the level of confidence global shipping companies have in the Malaysian port ecosystem,” he said in a statement.

He attributed the achievement to continued investment in capacity, efficiency, digitalisation, and close collaboration between government, port operators, and industry.

Port Klang, comprising Westports and Northport, handled 15.14 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, up from 14.64 million TEUs in 2024.

Loke said this was significant given the challenging global operating environment faced by the maritime industry.

Westports’ total handling volume grew 3.2% to 11.33 million TEUs, driven by strong transshipment volumes and terminal automation.

Northport recorded a 3.8% increase to 3.8 million TEUs, supported by gateway cargo growth and improved hinterland connectivity.

The Ministry of Transport stated Port Klang will continue strengthening its position through infrastructure, digitalisation, and sustainability investments.

PTP achieved a historic milestone by handling 14.03 million TEUs in 2025.

This makes it the first single container terminal in Malaysia to surpass the 14 million TEU mark.

The port had also surpassed 13 million TEUs just three weeks earlier, achieving both milestones in the same year.

Its 2025 total represented a 14% increase from 2024, supported by record-breaking operational performances.

PTP’s growth was driven by its strategic location and disciplined operations.
