Shaping the future: MSU alumni’s success in optometry

A good foundation paves the way for success in optometry

FOR Management and Science University (MSU) alumni Adi Putra Zaki Hafiz Abdul Kahar and Mohammad Khamal Haqqim Abd Ibrahim, their alma mater provided them with the best foundation, which launched both their careers and entrepreneurial success in the field of optometry.

Adi completed his master of business administration (MBA) in 2024, while Khamal graduated in 2021 with a master of science (by research) in Biomedicine, majoring in optometry.

Before that, Adi had earned a diploma in medical laboratory technology, and both later pursued the bachelor of optometry (hons) programme at MSU.

“I pursued these courses as I needed guidance and knowledge from experienced professors at MSU,” said Adi. “They helped me understand business management in the context of optometry.”

Both agreed that MSU has one of the best-equipped optometry labs among universities, including the latest technology, which provided a significant advantage in their education. In addition, MSU offers comprehensive training, thus ensuring their students are well-prepared for real-world practice.

“MSU maintains a great balance between academic learning and industry exposure,” said Khamal.

“What I appreciated most was the real-life experience it offered.”

Khamal also appreciated the success he achieved, when he received recognition through various awards at expos.

Among them was the gold medal for MSU’s assessment of children with special needs at the international innovation awards, Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2022, the gold medal for MSU assessment charts and tools for children with special needs at the 33rd International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition 2022.

Among the notable awards, the gold award for social innovation asia awards for MSU assessment charts and tools: A novel approach for eye sight assessment in children with special needs at the MTE 2020.

Thanks to this combination of high-quality facilities and robust training, MSU optometry graduates are well-regarded and highly sought after in the industry.

Beyond technical skills, their time at MSU also helped shape their professional outlook as eye care practitioners. Adi recalled a moment that influenced their future path, when a lecturer asked:

“What kind of optometrist do you want to be? Someone working 12-hour shifts or someone who wants control and flexibility in their career?”

“That question really made both of us think,” said Adi.

“We decided to explore business, but we soon realised that entrepreneurship comes with its own set of challenges.”

What began as a simple ambition grew into a journey of continuous learning. Over the years, they built their knowledge, refined their approach, and strengthened their commitment to delivering quality eye care.

Together they set up an optometry business, offering both retail and clinical services. While they specialise in eye examinations and prescription eyewear, what sets them apart is their patient-centred approach.

“When patients come to us, each one has unique concerns about their vision,” Adi explained. “Our responsibility is to provide personalised solutions, not just products. We emphasise problem-solving and educating customers about eye health.”

For Adi and Khamal, success is rooted in focus, determination and problem-solving. They believe challenges are unavoidable, but what matters most is the commitment to find the right solutions.

“If you don’t know something, don’t guess. Do your research and learn; My advice for success is simple; be as precise as possible in everything you do,” Adi advised.
