Canada ready to resume trade talks with US, says prime minister

The Sun Webdesk

KUALA LUMPUR: Canada stands ready to resume trade negotiations with the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said today.

However, the timing of any engagement rests with Washington.

Carney stated that Canada does not dictate the timing of renewed talks with the US administration.

He made these remarks during a press conference on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

Last Thursday, former President Donald Trump announced he was cutting off trade talks with Canada.

This decision followed an Ontario political ad featuring a snippet of former President Ronald Reagan discussing tariffs.

Washington also announced an additional 10% tariffs on goods from Canada on Saturday.

Canada remains the United States’ second-largest trading partner.

Carney reiterated that Canada will continue pursuing its trade diversification agenda.

This includes seeking new agreements in Asia and Europe and accelerating talks within ASEAN. – Bernama
