Cameron Highlands is Asia’s top rural destination, beating Japan & Thailand, famed for tea plantations, cool climate, and scenic villages.
CAMERON Highlands has officially been crowned Asia’s top rural destination, ahead of popular spots like Fujikawaguchiko in Japan and Khao Yai in Thailand, according to a new ranking released by digital travel platform Agoda — and Malaysians couldn’t be more proud.
In its latest press release, Agoda revealed that mountain and hillside destinations are rising in popularity as travellers seek escapes filled with culture, nature and tranquillity.
Among them, Cameron Highlands emerged as the region’s favourite choice.
The platform highlighted the Pahang highland’s signature cool weather and iconic tea plantations as key draws for both local and international visitors.
Beyond that, travellers continue to flock to its rolling green hills, colourful flower gardens and bustling farm markets for fresh produce.
“Nestled in the heart of Malaysia, Cameron Highlands is renowned for its cool climate and stunning tea plantations.
“Travelers can explore lush green landscapes, visit vibrant flower gardens, and enjoy fresh produce from local farms.
“The highlands offer a peaceful retreat with opportunities for hiking and exploring charming villages,” the press release read.
Agoda’s ranking was compiled using accommodation search data across eight Asian markets, focusing on rural destinations with fewer than 50,000 residents.
Searches were collected between 15 February and 15 August 2025.
Here are Agoda’s top eight rural destinations in Asia for 2025:
Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
Khao Yai, Thailand

Fujikawaguchiko, Japan
Kenting, Taiwan
