A Malaysian man has sparked heated debate online after saying he could not understand why some people choose to wear slippers to work, questioning their professionalism and mindset.
In a post shared online, the man wrote that he often sees people showing up to the office in slippers, a sight he said made him feel “sad”.
“I still don’t understand people who show up to work wearing slippers. How do you expect to be taken seriously and set yourself up for success with this kind of mentality?” he wrote.
However, his remarks did not sit well with many netizens, who quickly pushed back and accused him of being judgmental.
One user, @khairooolazmi, questioned whether the slipper-wearer had offended him in any way.
“Did he offend you? I wear slippers on my way to work and change into shoes during office hours. There are also times I wear slippers during work hours, like when going for Zohor prayers. So please chill. You don’t know the full context. Mind your own business before condemning others,” he commented.
Another netizen, @tisinasaki, shared that workplace dress codes differ and should not be a point of judgment.
“I’m grateful that my HR and bosses don’t mind whether we wear shoes or slippers, as long as the work gets done. Some people have foot problems and can’t wear shoes for too long. I’m also grateful to work with colleagues who don’t focus on unnecessary issues. We keep extra shoes in the office for meetings,” they wrote.
The criticism escalated further when @linimohdn called out the man for what she saw as hypocrisy.
“You don’t need to talk about success here. You drink while standing — where’s the etiquette? That’s already a failure in manners. What’s wrong with wearing slippers? Back when I worked in corporate, we knew when to wear slippers and when to wear shoes. My salary was six figures,” she said.
