Two-year-old accidentally opens Honda City door on Jalan Tun Razak, causing crash injuring two motorcyclists

POLICE are investigating a six-vehicle collision on Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, triggered when a child passenger unexpectedly opened a car door on Saturday evening.

The accident, which occurred at 6.15pm, involved four cars—a Toyota Corolla Cross, Honda City, Volkswagen Polo, and Perodua Bezza—along with two motorcycles, a Suzuki V-Strom SX and a CFMOTO 675 NK.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa reportedly confirmed the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without due care and consideration.

According to preliminary investigations, the incident began when a two-year-old girl sitting on her relative’s lap in the rear seat of the Honda City unintentionally opened the back door suddenly.

“A 25-year-old male motorcyclist riding the Suzuki V-Strom SX was unable to avoid the door and crashed into it before losing control and colliding with several other vehicles,” Mohd Zamzuri stated yesterday.

He added that a second motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man riding the CFMOTO 675 NK who was traveling behind, was also unable to avoid the collision and became involved in the accident.

The Suzuki V-Strom SX rider sustained a broken left arm and is receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, while the CFMOTO 675 NK rider suffered minor injuries. All four car drivers escaped without injuries.

Police are currently examining viral video footage of the incident to complete their investigation.

“It is believed that the child safety lock feature was not activated, allowing the door to be opened from inside. The Honda City driver, a 50-year-old woman, has had her statement recorded while witness statements are still being processed,” Mohd Zamzuri said.

The incident serves as a critical reminder for motorists, particularly parents and caregivers, about the importance of activating child safety locks when traveling with young passengers.

Child safety locks are specifically designed to prevent rear doors from being opened from inside the vehicle, a crucial safety feature when transporting children who may inadvertently open doors while the vehicle is in motion.

The accident also highlights the vulnerability of motorcyclists on busy urban roads, where sudden obstacles can leave riders with insufficient time to react safely.

Traffic authorities have consistently emphasized defensive riding techniques and maintaining safe following distances to allow adequate reaction time for unexpected situations.

Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 addresses driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other road users. Offenders can face fines up to RM10,000, imprisonment up to 12 months, or both.

The investigation continues as police gather additional witness statements and analyze available evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
