M’sian job seeker allegedly mocked by HR representative for asking RM3,000 salary

Malaysian graduate claims HR put down job seeker’s RM3,000 salary request, sparking debate over fair pay, starting wages and industry expectations

IT is increasingly difficult to secure a decent job these days, let alone negotiate a salary that necessarily reflects one’s qualifications.

A Malaysian job seeker recently shared their frustration after alleging that a company’s human resources representative mocked them for requesting a salary of just RM3,000.

“I’m a degree holder with close to a year of experience,” the individual wrote in a Threads post.

Following the post’s circulation, many netizens encouraged the job seeker to aim higher, pointing out that a person’s starting salary can significantly affect their future earnings.

“RM3,000 isn’t even a demand — it should be the bare minimum,” one user commented.

“That company is being cheap and doesn’t know how to recognise talent and value. Don’t be discouraged — move on. There are plenty of better opportunities out there,” another advised.

However, others weighed in to note that salary offers can vary depending on the industry, role, and a company’s budget, suggesting that expectations should be viewed within that context.
