M’sian man frustrated as girlfriend charges him fuel, not friends

A man vents on Reddit after his girlfriend asks him for fuel money instead of her carpooling friends to save face

CARPOOLING is a common practice among colleagues, but doing it for free often depends on whether the driver minds covering fuel costs.

In a viral Reddit post, a 21-year-old man shared his frustration after his girlfriend, also 21, asked him for fuel money instead of her colleagues, whom she regularly drives to work for free.

According to the post, the woman is a medical student currently completing her practical training at a hospital. She often drives her colleagues there but never asks them to chip in for fuel.

The boyfriend said he doesn’t mind supporting her financially or lending her money occasionally, but he finds it unfair that she claims fuel money from him while letting her friends ride for free.

He added that his girlfriend told him her parents had instructed her not to ask her friends for money — yet they also do not provide her with fuel allowance.

Seeking opinions from Redditors, the man asked if his frustration was justified. Many users speculated that his girlfriend was trying to “save face” and maintain a generous image among her peers.

“Your girlfriend wants to save face and appear generous, but she doesn’t have the means for it,” one user commented, adding that regardless of how many Redditors agreed, he still needed to address the issue directly with her.

Others suggested that she might simply feel more comfortable asking him for help, especially if her friends are financially worse off than she is.

Meanwhile, some users criticised her parents’ advice, saying it placed an unfair burden on the boyfriend.

“She shouldn’t be asking you for fuel money — that should come from her parents. Plus, when you carpool, at least show some manners. Even if they say it’s fine, just transfer them some fuel money — it’s basic courtesy,” one Redditor opined.
