Trailer driver’s repeated high beams spark road safety outcry

Trailer driver repeatedly flashes high beams to force lane changes during heavy southbound traffic jam.

A trailer truck driver has drawn widespread criticism after dashcam footage showed him repeatedly flashing high beams while weaving through traffic lanes, attempting to force other motorists to give way during congested highway conditions.

The incident, shared on Threads, has sparked public debate about dangerous driving behaviour and road safety during peak travel periods.

The dashboard camera recording shows the trailer driver activating high beams multiple times while cutting between the left and centre lanes, behaviour typically associated with vehicles attempting to intimidate others into yielding space.

According to the person who posted the footage, the incident occurred on a southbound highway during heavy traffic conditions.

“Acting like the king of the road, driving like it’s a car and weaving in and out between other vehicles. On the highway heading south. Traffic was congested, but he still kept flashing his high beams,” the poster stated.

The aggressive manoeuvres took place during a period of increased congestion on major highways, attributed to higher vehicle volumes during public holidays and toll discount promotions.

Traffic flow on several main expressways has been slower than usual due to the seasonal surge in travellers, making the trailer driver’s actions particularly concerning given the already challenging road conditions.

The social media post attracted numerous reactions from users, with most condemning the trailer driver’s behaviour as endangering the safety of other road users.

One commenter, @Dbpphotography87, questioned the logic behind such aggressive driving tactics during congestion.

“What’s the excuse for cutting off other vehicles when traffic is already jammed? Other lorries aren’t causing chaos like this one,” the user remarked.

Road safety advocates have long warned about the dangers of aggressive driving, particularly when involving heavy vehicles like trailers and lorries.

Such vehicles require significantly longer stopping distances and have larger blind spots compared to passenger cars, making sudden lane changes and aggressive manoeuvring especially hazardous.

The use of high beams to intimidate other drivers is considered both discourtful and potentially dangerous, as it can temporarily impair the vision of drivers ahead and create confusion about the flashing vehicle’s intentions.

Malaysian traffic regulations stipulate that high beams should be used primarily for visibility in low-light conditions on roads without adequate lighting, not as a tool to pressure other vehicles into yielding.

Repeated high beam flashing in heavy traffic violates proper highway etiquette and can be considered a form of road harassment or bullying behaviour.

Weaving between lanes without proper indication and safe spacing also contravenes traffic laws designed to maintain orderly and safe highway movement.

This incident adds to ongoing concerns about aggressive driving behaviour on Malaysian highways, particularly during festive seasons when road usage peaks.
