Adib’s case: No stone will be left unturned, says AG

KUALA LUMPUR: Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas (pix) today stressed that no stone will be left unturned when the Attorney-General’s Chambers gets the investigation paper (IP) from the police after they have identified the alleged perpetrators involved in the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

He said the IP will be studied carefully and professionally.

“The public should be assured that the office of the Public Prosecutor takes its responsibilities under the law very seriously. That is our promise,” he said in a statement here.

He also said much speculation, most of which are misinformed, have arisen as to the steps that have been to be taken by the various agencies of the government in the wake of last Friday’s decision of the Coroner, Rofiah Mohamad, at the completion of the inquest looking into the tragic death of Muhammad Adib.

Tommy said the Coroner decided that two or three persons had caused the death of Muhammad Adib, and directed the police to resume their investigations.

He said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador has already publicly responded that the police will investigate.

“They must be given time and space to undertake their investigations. They have the resources of the state and the necessary experience and expertise to carry out their duties under the law,” he added.

After the investigation has been completed and the alleged perpetrator(s) have been identified by the police, he said the completed IP is given to the Deputy Public Prosecutor with the recommendations of the police.

“It is at this stage that our role begins. We have to study the IP, review the recommendations of the police, and charge the individuals concerned,” he said.

Rofiah, who presided over the proceedings of the inquest for 41 days to determine the cause of Muhammad Adib’s death, accepted the testimony of the 29th witness, forensic pathologist Prof Dr Shahrom Abd Wahid who is based in United Kingdom, that during the incident, the victim was beaten and dragged from a Fire Department van.

Muhammad Adib, 24, who was a member of the emergency medical rescue services (EMRS) at the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue station, died on Dec 17, 2018, after fighting for his life for 21 days.

He was injured during a riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya, on Nov 27 last year. — Bernama
