Honda unveils Super-ONE prototype

Timothy Prakash

Honda has taken the wraps off its latest creation, the Super-ONE Prototype, at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 — a compact all-electric vehicle that aims to inject excitement back into everyday driving. On display throughout the duration of the event, the Super-ONE signals Honda’s ambition to redefine what a small EV can be: light, responsive, and genuinely fun to drive.

Developed under the concept “e: Dash BOOSTER,” the Super-ONE is designed to offer more than just clean mobility. It embodies Honda’s philosophy of creating vehicles that stir emotion while remaining practical and efficient. The name itself carries meaning — “Super” represents performance that goes beyond convention, while “ONE” reflects Honda’s goal to craft something distinct and uniquely its own.

The Super-ONE’s development centred on combining the environmental benefits of an electric vehicle with the sense of engagement and joy that Honda has long been known for. The company set out to create an EV that stimulates the driver’s senses — sight, sound, and touch — through its handling, performance, and interior experience.

Built on an evolved version of the lightweight platform from Honda’s N Series models, the Super-ONE promises agile, responsive handling. Its wide track and flared blister fenders not only give it a planted, muscular stance but also enhance stability through corners. The car’s proportions are compact but purposeful, combining everyday usability with the confidence of a sports car.

One of the standout features of the Super-ONE is its exclusive “Boost Mode.” When activated, this mode increases the power output, fully unleashing the electric motor’s performance potential. It also activates a simulated seven-speed transmission and Honda’s Active Sound Control system, which generates a realistic engine note and shift sensation in sync with driver inputs. The result is an experience that mirrors the tactile feedback and rhythm of driving a high-revving petrol car — only without the emissions.

Honda has gone to great lengths to ensure the Super-ONE feels as good to drive as it looks. The prototype has been tested extensively across various road conditions in Japan, the UK, and several Asian countries to fine-tune its handling and performance. Earlier in July, its conceptual predecessor — the Super EV Concept — made an appearance at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, where it took on the famous hill climb and impressed crowds with its lively, confident performance.

Visually, the Super-ONE’s design evokes both excitement and purpose. The sculpted bodywork, dominated by pronounced fenders and a wide stance, projects sportiness while also serving functional aerodynamic needs. Front and rear air ducts have been integrated to improve cooling and aerodynamic efficiency, reinforcing the car’s blend of form and function.

Inside, the cabin reflects the same driver-first philosophy. A clean, horizontal dashboard design minimises distractions and enhances visibility, while a triple-gauge cluster adds to the sporty feel. The asymmetrical use of blue materials adds character, while specially designed sports seats keep the driver securely in place. The result is an interior that feels focused, modern, and ready for spirited driving.

In Boost Mode, the interior comes alive with dynamic illumination and custom gauge displays, heightening the emotional connection between car and driver. Honda says this combination of sensory engagement — the sound, vibration, and visual feedback — creates a completely new kind of driving enjoyment for EVs.

The production version of the Super-ONE will debut first in Japan in 2026 before expanding to other markets with strong demand for compact EVs, including the UK and parts of Asia. Depending on the region, it will wear slightly different badges: “Super-ONE” in Japan and Asia-Oceania, “Honda Super-ONE” in select markets, and “Super-N” in the UK.

With the Super-ONE, Honda is making it clear that electrification doesn’t have to mean the end of driving excitement. This small but spirited EV is poised to carry forward Honda’s signature “joy of driving” — this time, into an electric future.
