ASEAN economic vision remains strong with deepening regional ties – Mohamad Hasan

ASEAN’s collective economic vision remains strong, anchored by regional cooperation that continues to deepen integration, strengthen supply chains and attract global investment, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN’s collective economic vision remains strong, anchored by regional cooperation that continues to deepen integration, strengthen supply chains and attract global investment, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

In his opening remarks at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) here today, he said the bloc’s economic progress reflects a shared commitment to resilience and inclusive growth.

“The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), continue to deepen integration, strengthen supply chains, and attract global investment.

“At the same time, we continue to diversify our partnerships, expanding ties with India, Australia, the European Union (EU), and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). This, in turn, enhances ASEAN’s collective strategic autonomy,” he said.

Mohamad said ASEAN’s position as a “strategic East–West connector” was further reinforced through the establishment of the ASEAN–GCC–China Summit in May this year, reflecting the bloc’s growing global influence.

He said ASEAN’s collective strength and reputation as a trusted partner are being recognised worldwide.

“All over the world, our collective strength is gaining recognition. Because the nations of ASEAN stand together and move as one,” he said.

Mohamad stated Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship has focused on initiatives that promote economic resilience, digital transformation and sustainable development across the region.

He added that the bloc’s ongoing economic agenda includes efforts to advance green transition, sustainable finance, and the digital economy, as part of its long-term blueprint.

The Foreign Minister said Malaysia’s stewardship of the regional grouping has also strengthened ASEAN’s role as a globally respected centre for dialogue and economic cooperation.

He emphasised that ASEAN must continue to preserve its unity and centrality to safeguard strategic autonomy and avoid fragmentation amid shifting global dynamics.

The AMM is part of a series of meetings held ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit, which gathers regional leaders to deliberate on key political, economic, and security issues under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
