China strengthens export controls on dual-use goods to Japan, citing national security and responding to Tokyo’s remarks on potential Taiwan Strait intervention.
BEIJING: China has tightened export controls on dual-use items to Japan.
The new measures took effect immediately on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Commerce stated that exports of all dual-use items to Japanese military users are now prohibited.
This ban also applies to any other end users that would help enhance Japan’s military capabilities.
The ministry did not specify which goods are affected.
China classifies various products in fields like biotechnology, aerospace and telecommunications as dual-use goods subject to export controls.
A ministry spokesperson linked the move to Japan’s recent “erroneous remarks concerning Taiwan”.
The spokesperson was referring to comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in early November.
Takaichi had suggested a potential attack on Taiwan could warrant military intervention by Tokyo.
Beijing claims the self-ruled island as part of its own territory and has not ruled out using force.
The tightened controls are “to safeguard national security and interests”, the spokesperson said.
The move raises the stakes in a simmering diplomatic row between the two nations.
