Flood evacuees rise in Perak and Penang but drop in Kedah

Perak and Penang report increased flood evacuees while Kedah sees a decrease, with multiple rivers exceeding danger levels.

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees at relief centres in Perak and Penang continued to rise this evening while Kedah recorded a decrease.

Perak now shelters 2,963 evacuees from 1,006 families compared to 2,922 individuals from 993 families this morning.

Two additional centres opened in Majung and Kerian bring the state total to 28 active relief centres.

Larut, Matang and Selama districts host 2,042 people from 712 families across 19 centres.

Manjung accommodates 597 individuals from 199 families in five centres while Kerian houses 214 people from 64 families in three centres.

Perak Tengah provides shelter for 110 people from 31 families in a single relief centre.

Penang’s evacuee count increased to 1,052 people from 288 families this evening from 1,026 individuals from 279 families this morning.

The state maintains seven relief centres across three districts with four in North Seberang Perai, two in Central Seberang Perai and one in Barat Daya.

North Seberang Perai district shelters 978 evacuees across four locations including Sekolah Kebangsaan Lahar Yooi with 401 people.

Central Seberang Perai hosts 75 people at SK Guar Perahu and 45 at SMK Permatang Pasir while Barat Daya accommodates 34 individuals at SK Tan Sri Awang Had Salleh.

Kedah reported a decrease to 1,562 evacuees from 488 families this evening compared to 1,858 people from 587 families this morning.

Fifteen centres remain operational across Kulim, Baling, Pokok Sena and Pendang districts with Pendang becoming the newest affected area.

Pendang’s Dewan Badminton Tanjung Radin opened at 2 pm today sheltering three people from one family.

Pokok Sena’s Dewan Serbaguna houses 73 individuals from 23 families while Kulim maintains the highest count with 1,146 evacuees from 346 families at eight centres.

Baling shelters 340 people from 118 families across five centres with the SJKC Chong Cheng centre in Kuala Muda closing at 3 pm today.

Five Kedah rivers exceeded danger levels including Sungai Pendang at 3.36 metres and Sungai Perik at 14.28 metres.

Three additional rivers reached warning levels including Sungai Ketil in Kuala Pegang at 37.09 metres and Sungai Chepir in Sik at 36.51 metres. – Bernama
