1.8 million Malaysians benefit from mySalam health scheme since 2019

mySalam has helped 1.8 million Malaysians with RM1.036 billion in health payouts since 2019, providing critical illness and hospitalisation coverage for B40 group.

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1.8 million people have benefited from the mySalam health protection scheme since its launch in 2019 through September this year.

Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the scheme has proven effective in helping low-income households manage medical costs and emergencies.

Beneficiaries include recipients of hospitalisation and critical illness benefits, former COVID-19 patients under investigation, and individuals who claimed for medical devices.

Critical illness claims accounted for the highest payout at RM658 million involving 82,000 recipients.

Hospitalisation benefits amounted to RM378 million for 1.22 million people.

“As of September 2025, the remaining mySalam fund is RM490.8 million,” Lim said during the Dewan Rakyat question-and-answer session.

The scheme provides free takaful health coverage to B40 individuals who are also Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah aid recipients aged 18 to 65 and their spouses.

She confirmed the scheme will continue in 2026 following the recent budget announcement.

Lim was responding to a supplementary question from Mordi Bimol (PH-Mas Gading) about mySalam claims data and potential expansion to the M40 group.

“The proposal to expand mySalam coverage to the M40 group will be thoroughly studied before implementation,” she said.

This careful approach aims to ensure appropriate health protection for middle-income earners.

Beyond mySalam, Bank Negara Malaysia collaborates with the insurance and takaful industry on Perlindungan Tenang products.

These products target underserved and vulnerable groups, particularly the B40 and M40 categories.

They comprise insurance and takaful plans approved by BNM that meet five key criteria.

The criteria include affordability, accessibility, good value, ease of understanding and purchase, and simple claims processes.
