AKPS foils bid to smuggle cannabis worth over RM1 million through KLIA

Malaysia border agency seizes 21.14kg of cannabis worth RM1.69 million at KLIA, preventing smuggling attempt.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs worth RM1.69 million out of the country through KLIA Terminal 1.

The agency said the drugs were seized during an inspection of checked-in baggage at the In-Line Baggage Screening (ILB) area on June 29.

It said the operation was carried out through coordinated enforcement action and close cooperation between AKPS KLIA and Aviation Security (AVSEC).

“A detailed inspection found 39 packages suspected to contain cannabis flower weighing 21.14kg. The drugs are estimated to be able to supply 70,333 users at one time,” it said.

“The suspect and seized items were handed over to the police for investigation and further action under existing laws.”

AKPS said the seizure reflected the effectiveness of layered security controls at the country’s entry and exit points, as well as the readiness of enforcement personnel in detecting smuggling attempts using various modus operandi.

It said it would continue to strengthen border control through integrated enforcement, the use of the latest inspection technology and strategic cooperation with other enforcement agencies to curb drug smuggling and cross-border crime.
