ASEAN foreign ministers meeting on Cambodia-Thailand border tensions postponed

A special ASEAN foreign ministers meeting on Cambodia-Thailand border tensions is postponed to next Monday at Thailand’s request

KUALA LUMPUR: A special ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting on the situation between Cambodia and Thailand has been postponed.

The meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday, will now be held next Monday.

The postponement was made at the request of Thailand, according to Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry.

Malaysia will chair the special meeting in its capacity as the current ASEAN chair.

The convening of the meeting follows a decision by the prime ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand on December 11.

It is part of ongoing efforts to address the border situation between the two ASEAN member states.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said negotiations to de-escalate the situation are ongoing.

“However, we continue to appeal to both sides to stop the fighting,” he told reporters.

Anwar described the situation as very critical, adding he remains in daily virtual contact with both sides.

Malaysia has previously called on Thailand and Cambodia to cease all hostilities.

It also urged both nations to refrain from any further military action, including deploying troops to front lines.

This call followed renewed fighting in the border area between the two countries. – Bernama
