Cambodia’s Hun Manet nominates Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize after brokering the KL Peace Accords
KUALA LUMPUR: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has nominated United States President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his role in brokering the historic Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords signed between Cambodia and Thailand today.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Hun said the nomination reflects “the gratitude of the Cambodian people” for Trump’s decisive leadership in bringing lasting peace between the two neighbours after years of border tension.
“Recognising your unwavering dedication and resolute efforts to promote peace, not only between Cambodia and Thailand but also among other nations, and reflecting the gratitude of the Cambodian peoples, I have nominated President Donald J. Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Hun said.
“Peace saves lives, and this is the heartfelt wish of our people.”
Hun also expressed deep appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his mediation efforts as Asean Chair, describing Malaysia’s role as pivotal in steering both sides towards a final agreement.
Trump, who witnessed the signing alongside Anwar and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, was lauded by both Southeast Asian leaders for his personal involvement in urging the two nations to reach a swift settlement.
The Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords, signed earlier today, formally end years of intermittent clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, marking one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs under Asean’s watch in recent years.
