Trump praises Malaysia as vibrant after landmark ASEAN summit visit

US President Donald Trump concludes his first Malaysia visit, signing trade deals and witnessing the historic KL Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia.

KUALA LUMPUR: United States President Donald Trump has hailed Malaysia as a “great, very vibrant country” following his two-day visit for the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

Trump made the remarks in a Truth Social post on Monday while departing for Japan, noting the US had signed major trade and rare earth agreements with Malaysia.

He highlighted witnessing the signing of a peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia on Sunday as particularly significant.

“NO WAR! Millions of lives saved,” Trump posted, adding “Such an honor to have gotten this done. Now, off to Japan!!!”

The US president arrived in Malaysia around 10 am on Sunday for his first ASEAN Leaders’ Summit since beginning his second presidency in January 2025.

Trump and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the signing of the historic KL Peace Accord between Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

During his visit, Trump conducted a bilateral meeting with Anwar and signed the Malaysia-US Reciprocal Trade Agreement.

The leaders also inked a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in critical minerals.

Trump additionally signed trade agreements with Cambodia and Thailand and attended the 13th ASEAN-US Summit.

He becomes the third American president to visit Malaysia after Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 and Barack Obama in 2014 and 2015. – Bernama
