Bill and Hillary Clinton call for open congressional hearings on their Epstein ties, challenging Republicans to avoid closed-door “kangaroo court” proceedings.
WASHINGTON: Former US president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton are demanding their upcoming congressional testimony on ties to Jeffrey Epstein be made public.
The couple, ordered to give closed-door depositions to the House Oversight Committee, argue a public hearing is needed to prevent Republican politicisation.
Hillary Clinton is scheduled to appear on February 26, with Bill Clinton testifying the following day.
Democrats allege the probe is being weaponised to attack political opponents of President Donald Trump, a longtime Epstein associate who has not been called.
House Republicans had previously threatened a contempt vote if the Clintons did not agree to testify.
Bill Clinton said Friday that a closed-door deposition would resemble a “kangaroo court.”
“Let’s stop the games & do this the right way: in a public hearing,” he posted on social media platform X.
Hillary Clinton stated the couple had already told the committee “what we know.”
“If you want this fight…let’s have it in public,” she said Thursday.
The Justice Department last week released over three million documents, photos and videos from its Epstein investigation.
Epstein died in custody in 2019 from what was ruled a suicide.
Bill Clinton appears regularly in the released files, but no evidence has implicated either Clinton in criminal activity.
The former president acknowledged flying on Epstein’s plane in the early 2000s for Clinton Foundation work.
He stated he never visited Epstein’s private island.
Hillary Clinton, who ran against Trump in 2016, said she had no meaningful interactions with Epstein.
She confirmed she never flew on his plane or visited his island.
